Padmount Transformers for Every Application

Padmount transformers are tamper-resistant, compartmentalized units designed for outdoor installation directly on a concrete pad. They serve underground power distribution systems for schools, hospitals, data centers, shopping centers, solar farms, industrial plants, and utility infrastructure. Applied Control supplies padmount transformers through Rex Power Magnetics and other qualified transformer manufacturers — offering both dry-type (no flammable liquids) and liquid-filled configurations.

Dry-Type Padmount

No flammable liquids — ideal for indoor-adjacent, hospital, school, and high-rise applications where fire codes restrict oil-filled transformers. VPI, VPE, and cast coil construction available. Lower maintenance and zero environmental contamination risk.

Liquid-Filled Padmount

Higher power density and better cooling for larger kVA ratings. Compartmentalized, tamper-proof enclosures with lockable doors. Dead-front or live-front configurations per utility or site requirements.

Solar Duty / GSU

Generator step-up transformers for solar photovoltaic installations. Engineered for outdoor exposure, inverter-output voltage profiles, and utility interconnection requirements.

Data Center / Hardened

Surge-hardened designs with enhanced BIL ratings for mission-critical facilities where uninterrupted power is essential. Custom impedance, tap configurations, and monitoring options available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need to request a padmount transformer quote?

At minimum: kVA rating, primary voltage, secondary voltage, and whether you need single-phase or three-phase. Ideally also provide impedance requirements, BIL rating, tap configuration, enclosure finish preferences, and any site-specific requirements like seismic qualification or altitude derating.

What is the typical lead time for a padmount transformer?

Lead times vary by type and kVA rating. Standard dry-type distribution transformers may ship in 4–8 weeks. Custom medium voltage padmount transformers typically require 16–30 weeks. Contact us for current factory lead times on your specific configuration.

Do you supply both dry-type and liquid-filled padmount transformers?

Yes. Through Rex Power Magnetics, we supply dry-type padmount transformers including VPI, VPE, and cast coil construction up to 15 MVA and 46 kV. We can also source liquid-filled padmount transformers for applications requiring oil-filled construction.

Can padmount transformers be used for solar farm applications?

Yes. Padmount transformers are widely used as generator step-up (GSU) transformers in solar photovoltaic installations. We supply units engineered specifically for solar duty with appropriate voltage ratings, impedance, and environmental protection for outdoor installation.
