Food and Beverage Plant Motors, Gearmotors and Panels
Match each part to how the area is cleaned. Hose-down areas need stainless washdown motors and Type 4X panels. Areas hit with hot, close-range pressure spray need IP69K gearmotors, enclosures and glands. Dry packaging and warehouse areas can use standard TEFC motors and NEMA 12 panels. The tables below give the ratings and part numbers for each zone.

Step 1: Pick by cleaning method
| Area | Motor or gearmotor | Panel |
|---|---|---|
| Dry: packaging, palletizing, warehouse | Standard TEFC TECO Westinghouse motor | NEMA 12 enclosure. A Filterfan works if the room air is clean |
| Hose-down: wet process rooms | TECO Stainless Steel Washdown, TEFC IP66, 1/2 to 10 HP | Type 4X, 304 stainless or fiberglass, with a sealed 4X cooling unit |
| Hot, close-range pressure wash | Bison 261 Sanimotor, IP69K gearmotor | IP69K and Type 4X sloped-top stainless, IP69 glands |
| Chlorinated or chloride cleaners | Stainless washdown motor or gearmotor | 316 stainless Type 4X |
IP69K (ISO 20653) tests 80°C water at 80 to 100 bar from close range. NEMA Type 4X tests hose-down water and corrosion. They are separate tests. See NEMA 4 vs 4X vs 12.

Common questions
Is a stainless washdown motor IP69K?
Not the TECO line. TECO lists its Stainless Steel Washdown motors as TEFC, IP66. Bison lists its 261 Sanimotor gearmotor as IP69K. If the crew uses a hot pressure washer close to the drive, use the IP69K gearmotor.
Can I run a washdown motor on a VFD?
Yes. TECO rates its stainless washdown motors for inverter use per NEMA MG 1 Part 31, at 10:1 variable torque and 4:1 constant torque, with a 1.0 service factor on a VFD. The Bison 261 is a 3 phase inverter duty motor. On long cable runs, see long motor leads on a VFD.
What grease is in the Bison Sanimotor?
Food grade H1 grease, filled for life. Bison lists it as maintenance free.
304 or 316 stainless?
Both are Type 4X. 316 holds up better against chlorides, salt and chlorinated cleaners. If sanitation uses chlorine-based sanitizers, pick 316.
Does every part on the panel need the same rating?
Yes. A fan, gland or window with a lower rating drops the whole panel to that rating. Seal every cable entry with a gland rated for the spray.
