Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X enclosures?

Both ratings protect against windblown dust, rain, and hosedown water. The difference is that NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance, which is critical for food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical, and coastal environments. Hammond's EN4SDSS Eclipse series offers NEMA 4X in both 304 and 316 stainless steel.

Can Hammond enclosures be used in UL 508A-listed panel builds?

Yes. Hammond industrial enclosures carry UL and CSA certification. The Eclipse series, 1414 JIC series, 1418 freestanding series, and stainless steel lines are all suitable for UL 508A industrial control panel construction when properly configured with the appropriate inner panels and accessories.

Can you cross-reference my Hoffman or Rittal enclosure to a Hammond equivalent?

What color options are available?

Standard Hammond enclosures are finished in ANSI 61 Gray or RAL 7035 Light Gray powder coat. Custom colors are available on request for OEM projects with sufficient volume.

Do you also supply non-metallic enclosures?

Yes. In addition to Hammond's steel and stainless steel lines, Applied Control carries Stahlin non-metallic enclosures — fiberglass-reinforced polyester enclosures ideal for corrosive, high-vibration, or electrically sensitive applications.
