Thermal Edge Air Conditioner Cross Reference

Thermal Edge enclosure air conditioners cross to the Pfannenberg DTS series for side mount and the DTT series for top mount. The tables below cover the CS, NE, HC and TM series, compared at the 95°F/95°F rating point off the performance curve.

The X position in a Pfannenberg DTS model number is the voltage code. Example: DTS 31X1 is the 4,000 BTU/hr side mount family; the exact orderable part number depends on 115, 230 or 460V. Send the voltage and we return the full part number.

Thermal Edge top mount to Pfannenberg cross reference

Compare capacity at 95°F/95°F, not the nameplate

Enclosure air conditioner ratings are not published at a single standard condition, so nameplate BTU/hr numbers across brands are not directly comparable. The honest comparison is capacity at 95°F ambient and 95°F enclosure temperature, read off the manufacturer's performance curve. A unit sold as 3,900 BTU/hr can deliver 3,400 BTU/hr at the 95/95 point. Every table on this page shows both numbers.

Four things have to line up before a substitution is valid:

  1. Capacity at the rating point. Match 95/95 performance, not marketing BTU.
  2. Voltage. 115, 230 or 460V must match the nameplate.
  3. Enclosure rating. NEMA Type 12, 3R, 4 or 4X on the air conditioner must match the enclosure environment.
  4. Mounting cutout. A capacity cross is not a cutout cross. Pfannenberg adapter plates exist for specific Hoffman retrofits; otherwise plan the panel work.

Also check where the cold air supply sits relative to the hot air return. Several competitor designs place them within 2 to 6 inches of each other, which lets cold discharge short-cycle straight back into the return and cuts effective cooling.

Common questions

What is the Pfannenberg equivalent of the Thermal Edge NE040?

The Pfannenberg DTS 31X1, the 4,000 BTU/hr class side mount delivering 4,100 at the 95F/95F point. The NE040 curve shows up to 4,400 at 95/95; if the heat load genuinely needs the full 4,400, the DTS 31X1 SL covers it at 5,097.

What is the Pfannenberg equivalent of the Thermal Edge HC121?

The Pfannenberg DTS 32X5. The HC121 delivers 11,600 BTU/hr at the 95F/95F point and the DTS 32X5 delivers 11,500 at the same point, an effectively even cross. Both run 115, 230 or 460V.

What do the digits in a Thermal Edge model number mean?

The trailing xx is the UL type: 12 is Type 12, 04 is Type 4, 4X is Type 4X, and 4XL4 is Type 4X mill finish. The yy pair is voltage: 12 is 115 VAC, 23 is 230 VAC, 48 is 460 VAC. S48 models are the 460V harsh environment builds of the NE series.

Are Thermal Edge BTU ratings directly comparable to Pfannenberg ratings?

Compare at the 95F/95F point, not the nameplate. Thermal Edge performance curves often run above nameplate: the NE060 sells as 6,000 BTU/hr and shows 7,300 at 95/95. The tables on this page show both numbers so the substitution is sized against the real operating point.
