Check the UL listing before you substitute

Tekima builds two low-capacitance VFD families and they are not interchangeable.

  • 365S is UL Listed Type TC-ER (file E361258), XHHW-2, 600/1000V, direct burial, sunlight resistant, oil resistant I and II, FT4/IEEE 1202, WTTC, c(UL) CIC/TC-ER, and MTW 600V. This is the series that substitutes for competitor tray cable.
  • 361S is c(UR)us Recognized under AWM Style 2570 (file E314444) and carries an 80°C rating at 1000V on the UL side. It is not tray cable. Use it inside enclosures and machinery per NFPA 79 and UL 508A, not in an exposed tray run.

Every cross on this page is to 365S. If a quote comes back referencing 361S for a tray application, it is the wrong part.

How to read a VFD cable cross

Three things decide whether a substitution is valid. Get all three right and the cross holds.

  1. UL listing. Listed Type TC-ER and Recognized AWM are not interchangeable. A tray run needs Listed TC-ER.
  2. Ground configuration. Single insulated ground or three symmetrical grounds. If the drawing calls out symmetrical, a single ground cable is not a substitute.
  3. Voltage rating. 600V, 600/1000V and 2000V constructions exist for real reasons. Long runs and fast rise time drives need the higher rating.

Common questions

What is VFD cable and why is it different from regular power cable?

VFD cable is a shielded, low-capacitance power cable built for the run between a variable frequency drive and its motor. A drive switches its output thousands of times per second, which puts high frequency noise on the cable and drives common mode current through the motor bearings. Standard power cable has neither the shield to contain that noise nor the insulation geometry to limit the capacitance that produces it.

What does TC-ER mean on a VFD cable?

Type TC-ER is a UL listing that permits tray cable to be used in exposed runs between a cable tray and the equipment it feeds, without conduit, under NEC Article 336.10. A cable marked AWM or Recognized rather than Listed TC-ER cannot be used that way.

What is the difference between a single ground and a symmetrical ground VFD cable?

A single ground design places one insulated ground conductor alongside three phase conductors. A symmetrical design places three smaller grounds evenly around the phases. The symmetrical arrangement gives common mode current a balanced return path, which reduces the current that would otherwise find its way through the motor bearings.

Do I need 1000V or 2000V VFD cable?

Most 480V drive systems are served by 600/1000V rated cable. 2000V constructions exist to handle reflected wave voltage peaks on long cable runs and on drives with fast rise times. If the run is long or the drive manufacturer specifies it, use the higher rating.
