Need 2.5 kVA?
Micron does not list a 2.5 kVA ImperviTRAN. The catalog steps from 2 kVA to 3 kVA. Size the load, then pick the 2 kVA unit if the sealed plus inrush VA fits the regulation chart, or the 3 kVA unit if it does not. Going one size up costs a few pounds and a little panel space and removes the sag question.
Need 7.5 kVA or 10 kVA?
ImperviTRAN control transformers stop at 5 kVA. Micron builds single-phase general purpose and power transformers from 50 VA through 100 kVA, and three-phase from 3 kVA through 750 kVA, in encapsulated and ventilated designs. For 7.5 kVA and 10 kVA, send the primary and secondary volts, phase, and whether it needs to be NEMA 3R. We quote it from Micron or from Rex Power Magnetics, whichever fits the spec and ships sooner.
How to size a control transformer
- Add the sealed VA of every device that can be energized at once. Coils, pilot lights, relays, timers, the PLC power supply.
- Find the inrush VA of the largest contactor and add it to the sealed VA of everything else.
- Read the Micron regulation chart for that inrush total. If the circuit can accept a 10 percent sag on pull-in, pick the size where the total sits inside the chart. If not, go one size up.
- Check the ambient. Above 40 C, or in a sealed enclosure with a heat problem, go one size up again. The enclosure heat load calculator tells you what the transformer adds to the panel.
